On 27 Jun 2009 at 9.40pm, J C Sum &
'Magic Babe' Ning set an official world record for “most number
of grand illusions performed in 5 minutes” by presenting 15
illusions within the stipulated time period.
More than 3000 people turned up to witness history being made at the
Central promenade by the iconic Singapore River. The outdoor event was
entitled “The Impossible Record” and was the closing
highlight of the Singapore River Festival 2009, organized by the
Singapore Tourism Board.
The International Brotherhood of Magicians and the Singapore Book of
Records officially adjudicated and endorsed the world record attempt.
The record is the first ever magic record of any kind to be adjudicated
by the Singapore Book of Records and is also in the process of being
submitted to Guinness World Records.
The 15 illusions in 5 minutes saw the illusionists magically appear,
vanish, teleport, exchange places, penetrate and dissect each other as
well as produce a full-sized motorcycle. Time ran out just as the duo
completed presenting their latest illusion, “360 Sawing”. In this
one-of-a-kind illusion, ‘Magic Babe’ Ning was divided in half and the
top half of her body was vertically rotated around her bottom half. (See full list of illusions below)
After
the successful record attempt, J C Sum & ‘Magic Babe’ Ning were
presented with the official record certificate by the President of the
Singapore Book of Records. The President of the International
Brotherhood of Magicians Ring 115 also presented them with a special
achievement award.
The difficulty of “The Impossible Record” was the
precision,
physical & mental stamina and technical illusion ability needed
to
execute all illusions successfully at break-neck speed. J C Sum
&
'Magic Babe' Ning have taken 3 years to master the 15 illusions that
will be presented. Each illusion took approximately 120 hours of
rehearsal.
Dutch illusionist, Hans Klok, who presented 10 illusions in 5 minutes
last year during a TV studio recording, set the previous un-official
record.
Since it was first announced, “The Impossible Record” has garnered wide mainstream interest from
both the public and media. Multiple media outlets throughout the region
and international magic news websites have reported on the world record
act. Media that covered the event live included Channel News Asia,
Today, Razor TV, Lianhe Zaobao, CTV (Taiwan), AXN, MagicSeen (U.K.)
& OMY.sg.
